Set in the heart of East Anglia, the bustling market town of Newmarket, Suffolk, is commonly known as the headquarters of British horseracing as well as the global centre of thoroughbred horseracing. It boasts the largest cluster of training yards in the entire country and is home to many key horseracing organisations. Considering its size, Newmarket has rather a lot to offer in the way of excitement, history, intrigue and scandal. In order to explore it all you are likely to need more than a day and the comfort of a Newmarket hotel may be just what you need to make the most of an exciting day at the races.

The racecourse is actually made up of two courses, the Rowley Mile Course and the July Course. Both courses are wide, galloping tracks and used only for flat racing. The courses host a total of 9 out of the 32 British racing's annual Group 1 races, putting them near enough on a par with Ascot Racecourse.

The main focus of the town is obviously horseracing and the whole town revolves around horses. There are more than 2,500 horses in Newmarket enjoying automatic right of way and even their own traffic light system! Racing in the town has been dated as far back as 1174 and the town has strong royal connections. It was King James I who was responsible for building the first grandstand on Newmarket Heath. But it was Charles II, whose Royal Palace is still standing in the town today, who in 1665, by Act of Parliament, instituted the first race to be run under written rules and thereby establishing Newmarket as the home of British horseracing.

To explore this history further, try a visit to the National Horseracing Museum which is of course in Newmarket. The museum is situated in part of the buildings that were known as the Subscription Rooms, a place where betting took place in the mid 19th Century. The museum undertakes to tell 'the story of people and horses involved in racing, from its royal origins to modern heroes' and is well worth a visit.

Newmarket is around 65 miles from London and just 12 miles from Cambridge. It is easily accessible with the A11 and A14 providing easy local access from the main routes of the M11, A1 and M1. The railway station is on the Cambridge / Bury St Edmunds / Ipswich Line and regular services run from London Kings Cross and Liverpool Street. Newmarket Racecourse provides a subsidized coach service from Newmarket Town Centre and Cambridge Station as well as a complimentary shuttle service on all race days. It is worth noting however that all routes get busy on race days and a stopover is becoming a popular option.

There are many places to stay nearby with hotels ranging from national budget chain hotels offering convenience and comfort to the more exclusive luxury spa variety. If you are saving your money for the races, then one of the budget chain hotels in the area can offer comfort, without the frills at a good price. Often with Wife and free on-site parking they are convenient and are proving very popular with the UK public. These hotels in particular get well booked up on race days and it is therefore a good idea to book well in advance of your trip.

If your budget will stretch a little further then there are a number of luxury hotels in the area. As you would expect, Newmarket now offers some of the most stylish boutique hotels. In keeping with the area, many of the top hotels are housed in some very prestigious buildings which have been sympathetically modernised to meet the requirements of a modern hotel. Set in the rolling chalk hills of the Suffolk countryside and complete with leisure facilities including beauty rooms and luxury spa treatments, not to mention award winning restaurants you may find it hard to tear yourself away from your Newmarket hotel.

To get a true taste of 'The Sport of Kings' and all that Newmarket has to offer, you will need more than a day. With such an excellent choice of accommodation, you are sure to find a Newmarket hotel to suit your style and budget.
